Introduction
Counseling can be classified into remedial, preventive and the developmental approach (Jordaan et al., 1968). These interventions may include individual and social counseling organized on different levels or groups; it also contains the ability to tackle future difficulties and to make the balance between plans and enhancement of relationship whether it could be between couples, parent-child, individuals, and within communities (Kagan et al., 1998).
Trends in counseling
Three major theoretical forces have dominated the work of counselors and therapists in the past. These include the three original and most practiced forms of helping the psychodynamic (first force), cognitive-behavioral (second force), and existential-humanistic (third force) theories of counseling and therapy. Newer theories have evolved and are becoming more central. First among these is multicultural counseling and therapy, often called the fourth force in helping.
Also, it is now important to understand and become skilled in other newer approaches. Important among these are feminist, narrative, positive psychology/ wellness, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, interpersonal, and developmental counseling and therapy.
Beyond that, family therapy is increasingly being recognized
for its contribution to individual work as well as to the family.
Numerous societal factors have contributed to the ongoing evolution of counseling and psychotherapy. These include the rapid demographic transformation of society, which has underscored the need for counselors and therapists to develop and implement new competencies in their work.
New
developments in professional organizations have also impacted the way
practitioners think about and implement various counseling and psychotherapy
theories and practices. These professional developments include revisions in our
ethical standards, increasing use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1994), and a growing
emphasis on the importance of using evidence-supported therapies when
addressing clients’ problems.
An Integral Approach to
Counseling
An integral approach to counseling and psychotherapy provides
a comprehensive, integrated, and non-reductionist perspective of the evolution
of counseling and psychotherapy theories and practices. It is comprehensive in
the way it includes a broad range of helping theories as well as related
scientific, professional, social, and cultural factors that all impact the practice of counseling and psychotherapy (British Psychological Association,
2007).
The integral model means that the assessment of our clients’
strengths and needs as well as the decisions practitioners make when using
different helping theories with clients cannot be reduced to a few independent
variables. Rather, the theories students and practitioners use in their
clinical practices need to be grounded in a broad understanding of multiple and
interconnected factors. This includes
- being mindful of the different ways individual clients perceive and construct the meaning of their life experiences;
- understanding how clients’ behaviors are not only linked to different reinforcements in the environment but also tied to physical, biological, and neurological factors;
- being cognizant of the increasing press for practitioners to implement evidence-supported therapies in ways that are consistent with the ethical
- standards outlined by various professional organizations, as well as the changes that are constantly occurring in our contemporary society; and
- being committed to operating in culturally responsive and competent ways with persons in diverse client populations (BPS, 2007).
Trending Ways of
Counseling
Tele medicines
Telemedicine has become more prevalent, has technological advancement continues to influence how we deliver services and treat our clients. The general public, including those in need of counseling services, can access these services from home within minutes, and cost-effectively. Some of the most cited concerns regarding e-therapy and email communication are issues of confidentiality, privacy, informing the client about the vulnerability of email and other web-based communication regarding privacy so they can make informed consent about treatment discussing clients identity, making a proper assessment of client suitability for e-therapy, application of reporting laws, and crisis intervention.
Internet psychotherapy sessions may suffer from miscommunication between the psychotherapist and client. Miscommunication may inadvertently harm the client and possibly increase trauma after the disclosure of important facts about them (Gackenbach, 2011)
Arenas. Arrangement or modalities media through which therapy given like
telephone, email, dance therapy, writing therapy, meditation,, etc are arenas.
e-therapy (internet counseling) also refers to arenas. Arenas are self-help
techniques.
Peer Counselling
Peer counseling refers to any kind of counseling or therapy
provided on an egalitarian basis with each party agreeing temporarily to take
the role of a counselor with the other has a client and then reversing roles.
Benefits include mutually egalitarian, economy, and avoidance of professional
intrusion. Problems include boundary issues compromised ability to hold and
transferential dynamics
Individual therapy
Individual therapy refers to the direct contact of the client and a counselor or one on one talk of the client and counselor. This offers optimal confidentiality,
privacy, attention, containment, intimacy, and safety. The best arena for each client must be balanced by the consideration which includes
the therapist expertise in various areas potential for dependency,
manipulation
Counseling Therapy via
Other Media
Face-to-face individual therapy based on talking is the most
common format increasingly therapy is offered using alternative media and
arenas. The expressive art therapies include art therapy, drama therapy,
psychodrama, dance, and movement therapy. Therapeutic writing and the use of other
media are increasing in their availability and professionalism. For certain
groups (children, older, and those who dislike primarily intense verbal
communication) one or another form of expressive therapy may be the arena or
modality of choice. Bodywork may or may not fit here, but obviously, in an
alternating means of providing therapy,
where there are clearly problems expressed somatically, therapeutic massage,
breathing, or other techniques may be considered. Now world- wide they give great importance to the health of employees. Those
employees who found involved in malpractices are provided with counseling in jail also
so that they can live a healthy life.
