Self Assessment Tools in Clinical Psychology| PHQ9 and GAD 7

PHQ-9 and GAD-7 are both standardized self-assessment tools used in the field of mental health to measure the severity of symptoms related to depression and anxiety, respectively.

1. PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9):It's a nine-item questionnaire designed to screen and assess the severity of depression symptoms. The questions are based on the criteria for diagnosing major depressive disorder according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Individuals rate how often they've experienced specific symptoms over the past two weeks. The scores range from 0 to 27, with higher scores indicating more severe depressive symptoms.

2. GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7):This is a seven-item self-report questionnaire used to evaluate and measure the severity of generalized anxiety disorder symptoms. Similar to PHQ-9, individuals respond to questions based on their experiences over the past two weeks. Each item assesses the frequency and severity of anxiety symptoms. The total scores range from 0 to 21, with higher scores indicating more severe anxiety symptoms.

Both PHQ-9 and GAD-7 are widely used in clinical settings, research studies, and screenings to assess the presence and severity of depression and anxiety symptoms. They serve as valuable tools for clinicians to monitor symptom changes over time and make informed decisions about treatment options for individuals experiencing these mental health conditions.
