        Organizational Psychology is the understanding, prediction, and control of human behavior in organizations. Leadership is one of those functions. Leadership is about influencing people towards their goals.  Management is considered to be faced by three major dimensions, technical, conceptual, and human. Psychologists realized the importance of the human dimension of management to the extent that theories were developed to understand human behavior in organizations.

A leader motivates their followers, encourage them and support them to achieve their goals.

Power

        Power is the ability to influence the behavior of others. It's the ability to get things done. Those Individuals who have power can rule the organization, direct the people in a specific direction. Employs if resist the power of owner or manager, then it should deal effectively and wisely.

Types of Power

Downward Power

        When a leader effects subordinates, it is called downward power. We can also say this is about controlling the actions of juniors.

Upward Power

subordinates can also exercise upward power by trying to influence the decisions of their leader.

Sources of Power used by Leaders 

 Six types of power are legitimatereferentexpertrewardcoercive, and informational which leaders use to achieve the organizational goals.

Legitimate Power

Also known as “positional power,” this is the power individuals have from their role and status within an organization. Legitimate power usually involves formal authority delegated to the holder of the position.

Referent Power

Referent power is about the capability of individuals to attract others and build their loyalty. It depends on the personality and interpersonal skills of the power holder. Such leaders are inspired by others because of their charismatic personalities and communication skills.

Expert Power

Expert power is based on a person’s knowledge, skills, and experience. 

Reward Power

Reward power derives from the ability to discuss valued material rewards or create other positive incentives. It provides external motives to the employees. In an organization, this motivation may comprise of promotions, increases in pay, or extra time off, bonuses, etc.

Forced Power

    Forced or Coercive power is the application of sanctions and other negative consequences. These can include direct punishment or the withholding of desired resources or rewards.

Informational Power

Informational power comes from entrance to realities and the knowledge that others find useful or valuable.

All of these sources of power has one aim i.e. to achieve organizational goals and purposes.


The Power Influence  in Leadership

Herbert Kelman identified three types of social influence:

1.      compliance,

2.      identification,

3.      internalization.

Compliance: means behave in a way other want.  

Identification: people behave according to a role model, such as a celebrity. Status is the key to social influence.

Internalization: is when people accept the values and adopt that, make a part of their behavior.

Leaders Use this Power By

A leader can use these three types of influence in an organization, to push the employees towards organizational goals.

Example of Compliance, Identification and Internalization

Compliance is a means of following rules and regulations to maintain the organizational environment to achieve organizational goals. Similarly, identification occurs when people copy the actions of people they look up to and respect, Internalization results when employees grip the vision and values of a leader and develop an assurance to fulfilling them.

Leaders use these to achieve organizational goals.
