Sigmund Freud’s Concept of Dreams

According to Sigmund Freud who was the father of Psychoanalysis Dreams are Royal Road to the unconscious. Through dreams, we can assess the underlying information which may be problematic for the individual.

Some of the repressed material comes through a dream to awareness. Sometimes it happens that clients visiting the psychologist do not want to share private information because of confidentiality issues. So in this case psychologist should ask about the dreams which the client has during sleeping.

For example, I have a female client diagnosed with schizophrenia.  She was the victim of child abuse. But she does not want to share and has a paranoid personality. So I ask her to tell me about the dream which she recently has. She told that while sleeping I saw a man with a weird face attack me, and was trying to strangle me. I started screaming for release……………….hence the clue here is that A client is scared of the opposite gender “male”, they seem to her wired. The second question is that what type of attack,….

After that, a careful probing about dreams can lead the psychologist to the root cause of the problem.

Forms of Dreams

According to Freud, there are two types of Dreams in terms of content

Such dreams are based on often events and activities of the day.

Latent Dreams

Comprise of symbols. The hidden meaning of the dreams.  Like Freud interprets visualizing snakes in dreams as male sex organs and flying in the air means sexual desire are high.

Commonly, greenery in dreams is the symbol of prosperity, seeing black things is taken bad fortune, and so on.

Dreams occur most often during REM sleep(rapid-eye moment), which is the deepest stage of sleep. At this stage eye move rapidly in various directions, various physical changes occur during this stage like heartbeat increase, Blood pressure rises from normal, breathing becomes irregular and rapid. This stage lasts about 20 to 25 % of adult sleep and happens in intervals that can last anywhere from a few minutes to 30 minutes. A person passes through the REM stage 3 to 6 times so every individual has 3 to 6 dreams per night. And if the individual wakeup during this stage, then he has complete information of what he dreams.
