As social being human want to be connected to their surrounding members. Sometimes people consciously or unconsciously ignore others by not responding to their greetings, avoiding eye contact, do not talk to someone in the group as he/ she is absent, not present there. This act of ignorance is called Ostracism or the social exclusion or social rejection.

Ostracism is hurting people with low resilience as it threatens the basic need for belongingness of humans. Ostracized individuals may consider themselves as socially rejected and no doubt rejection can be painful and has negative effects of ostracism.

Now Question Arises What are the possible effects of ostracism? So the Possible answers are discussed below.

Sadness and Anger:

 The immediate response to ostracism is anger and sadness.

Threat to physical and psychological Health:

 According to the researchers ostracism or social exclusion is a Threat to physical and psychological Health of individual as it hit the basic needs like self-reports of belonging, self-esteem, control, and a sense of meaningful existence. In Cyber ball experiment it was that online rejection damage the neural network of brain, individual feel social pain.

Social death:

Long-term ostracism or social exclusion/ rejection lead to social death. In straight-way memories of short-term ostracism can retrigger the original pain linked with the event (Chen et al., 2008).

Cognitive effects of Ostracism:

As a social animal individuals thrive for social inclusion, want to be connected, hence individuals are involved cognitively, emotionally in relations. Ostracism effects in such involvement are severe, individual suffer from depression, loneliness, feeling of rejection lead to suicidal thoughts hopelessness, decreases in cognitive tasks such as intelligent thought and self-regulation. According to William If an individual‘s inherent need to be accepted is not fulfilled he or she feels emotional distress, pain, and a drop in cognitive functioning surrounding the event of ostracism.

Torture to Mind

similar to physical torture, ostracism is torture to mind. Effect the normal functioning of the mind.

Have difficulty in Building New Relations

Because of fear of rejection ostracized individuals do not want to be involved in new relations, want to be alone, form superficial relations with surrounding people, and have weak social ties. And reaction time of an ostracized people also decreases.

 Terrorist mindset and Ostracism

The severe reaction to ostracism is forming a terrorist mindset. Found Mohamed-Aggad, who was rejected by the army shot 90 people dead in Paris in 2015. Another case of Anders Breivik reported whose case history shows that he faced rejection/ ostracism before killing dead n70 people in Norway in 2011.

These cases show that ostracism leads to a Terrorist mindset. Stracism develops extreme behavior in its victims.

Concluding Remarks on Ostracism and Effects of Ostracism

Ostracism/social exclusion/ social rejection is like social death lead to severe negative effects including but not limited to sadness, anger, depression, loneliness, feelings of inferiority, affects the mental health of the individual, difficulty in building new relations, effect self-concept, etc.
